Research Journal, Part 6: Database Feature and Searching Techniques

Hello everyone! How are you today? I know that you are working hard for good result for final test in next few week, me too. Somebody did not have enough time for sleeping. I hope you will always healthy in order to overcome the difficulty of the courses in this quarter. We are staying week 7; let’s smiling and said that "Do not give up." I also remember a famous sentence “No pain, no gain.”
Let me go back our topic for this week,
Research Journal, Part 6: Database Feature and Searching Techniques
We learn and practice about Boolean Operators. If you are person who took Math 107 class, you were a lucky student. But no, I want to share with you some information which is my understanding about Boolean Operators.
This is identifying about Boolean operators:
Boolean operators are used in programming. It would be hard for me to explain exactly how they are used in programming without giving you a programming course, but I can tell you basically what they do. The main Boolean operators are AND, OR, NOT, and XOR (exclusive or)”
We are only thinking about some letter, such as: AND, OR. These two letters are relative words with our topic. Valuation these words are necessary for our learning.
If you put in "Bob" AND "Smith" you would get results that have both Bob and Smith in them (say 150 results).
If you put in "Bob" OR "Smith" you would get any result with Bob or Smith (say 3000 results).
If you put in "Bob" NOT "Smith" you would get Bob Jones, but not Bob Smith.
Not all search engines use these. And some use other terms for them.
Then, we use Academic search premier on Clark College Library website.
In part 1, these are 5 questions which I chose for my example:
1.      Does television advertising by the pharmaceutical industry have an impact on prescription drug abuse?
In this question, I realize that there are two important parts. One is prescription drug, two is abuse. I apply for my search following this form “prescription drug AND abuse”. I have 3838 results.
2.      Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat-based diet?
There are two important parts. One is vegetarian diet. Two is meat-based diet. My search form is “Vegetarian diet OR meat-based diet”. I have 946 results.
3.      Should educators use commercial services to combat plagiarism?
There are two important parts. One is commercial services. Two is combat plagiarism. My search form is “commercial services OR combat plagiarism.” I have 8121 results.
4.      What are the similarities between the Great Depression of the 1930s and the current economic problems?
There are two important parts. One is the Great Depression of the 1930s. Two is the current economic problems. My search form is “the Great Depression of the 1930s OR current economic problems.” I have 378 results.
5.      How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over someone with a high school diploma?
There are two important parts. One is a college graduate earn. Two is a high school diploma earn. My search form is “A college graduate earns OR a high school diploma earns.”
In part two, my question for my topic is: “Are light intensity and oxygen effect on photosynthesis?”
I have three important parts are: one is photosynthesis, two is light intensity, and three is oxygen.
My search form is “Photosynthesis OR light intensity OR oxygen” I get 236292 result.
My search form is “Photosynthesis AND light intensity AND oxygen” I get only 129 results.
Eventually, I think that you will be a successful student in computer technology.
Once more times, “GOOD LUCK TO YOU”Research Journal, Part 6: Database Feature and Searching TechniquesSearch techniqueshttp://sinhcollege.blogspot.com/b/post-preview?token=rHdUvzoBAAA.xe6FgbqQXqs6j8_QojJnsQ.zgVGTHKq307Eer6v-YxCjA&postId=396109027669337735&type=POST

  1. Hi, Sinh;

Thank you for the explanation of boolean, since I'm not a computer programmer, I'm not exactly sure how to explain why it works. Using boolean to create a search statement takes practice and you seem to be developing how to identify key concepts and linking with the connectors. Your search statement for your research topic seem perfect with AND in between. We'll start exploring how to use these in databases.

    Cheers,
    Andrea
