Types of Information: Focus on search Engines and Web Sites

Welcome to the topic of eighth week. We have worked hard from beginning of this quarter. Now, we are preparing for a good final. Of course, everything is not simple, but I always think that you are a good student. You will win. Good luck to you.

Our topic of this week is: "Types of Information: Focus on search Engines and Web Sites"

Our mission is find five search features of the search tool which was upload on Moodle. I read on Research Journal, there is a word "ANDing". I find out its mean on internet, and I want to share with you.

            What is the ANDing process?

            When a source host attempts to communicate with a destination host, the source host uses its subnet mask to determine whether the destination host is on the local network or a remote network. This is known as the ANDing process.

            The AND function has the following properties:

            · If the two compared values are both 1, the result is 1.

            · If one of the values is 0 and the other is 1, the result is 0.

            · If both of the compared values are 0, the result is 0.

            Therefore, we follow this way. First of all, I have five search tool, such as:

           

      Ask Advanced Search;    Internet Public Library ;  Web Search from About.com ;  FindArticles;  Dogpile

1.      Ask Advanced Search: Ask search only help us find out the answers which one I want to find. Ask Advanced Search did not have the number of results.

Ex: I put Biology Articles in Google search, I have about 142,000,000 results; but I put Biology Articles in Ask search, I have nothing.

I put "Biology Articles" in Google search, I have about 123,000 results; but I put "Biology Articles" in Ask search, I see some questions articles such as:

What is a good biology article?

What is a good website for Biology articles?

Where can I Find Biology Articles?

2.      Internet Public Library: I think this search is not good, because when you type wrong letter, it did not have synonym for your choose.

3.      About.com: When I put Biology Articles on About search, I receive 18,100 results. Then I put "Biology Articles" on that, I received 15 results. In this search, it did not have synonym, therefore, be careful  when you type wrong letter.

4.      Find Articles: When I put Biology Article on it, I received 35,500,000 results. This search has a synonyms. I feel that it is very fast. When I put "Biology Articles" on it, I receive 18,400 results.

5.      Dogpile:  I think this search is good. Besides that, I see a letter line "Search result from: Google, Yahoo, Yandex." This search did not has numbers of result.

Next, I find out something such as:

            " What is the difference between search engine and metasearch engine?"

·         A search engine is a search tool that usually have their own database of sites they crawl and list in their database, for example Google.

·         A meta-search engine is a search tool that sends user requests to several other search engines and/or databases and aggregates the results into a single list or displays them according to their source.

            "What is a Subject Directory?"

            To locate information on the Web, you either know Web address for a specific site, or search for a topic of interest.

When searching by topic, a huge number of pages will often be retrieved and makes it difficult to identify the relevant resources. Subject directories help to alleviate the problem.

Subject Directories:

·         are created and maintained by the directory's staff

·         allow you to browse Internet resources by different subject categories

·         enable you to search by keywords within the contents of the directories

In this case, I have:

§  Meta- search is Dogpile

§  Subject Directory are About.com, Internet Public Library,

§  The best of the rest is FindArticles

§  Search tool is ASK.COM.

Eventually, I have so many tools for my research. Everything is in the questions such as:

1. What do you want to find?

2. Do you understand all of the tool around you?

3. How do you apply your knowlege about the tools which help you have the best result ?
